Dr Fiona Dowman Clinical Psychologist

About me

Hello, I’m Dr Fiona Dowman and I’m a Clinical Psychologist and addiction specialist with over ten years of experience working in NHS and third sector organisations in London, UK.

I specialise in supporting people who are affected by  drugs and alcohol. I have worked as a senior psychologist in a NHS Drug and Alcohol service where I supervised and trained staff and supported service users to develop alternative coping strategies to drinking and drug use to manage distress. Through this work I came into contact with affected loved ones (family members, partners and friends).  My doctoral research explored the help-seeking experiences of family members affected by someone else's drug or alcohol use and highlighted some of the barriers to receiving help.

If you haven't already guessed, my favourite colour is purple! I also like scented candles, key lime pie, and theme parks.

My Approach

A purple bridge

I have a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of East London and I am registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). I am a therapist, trainer and supervisor.

One size does not fit all when it comes to psychological support! I draw on a range of evidence based therapies to adapt to the needs of the person I am working with. I also consider the context within which people experience and make sense of psychological distress, such as cultural, social, religious and racial backgrounds. The main approaches I draw on are Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT),  Compassion focused Therapy (CFT), and mindfulness based interventions. I also draw on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), systemic, and narrative models when this is helpful. I strive to adapt therapy sessions and psychological resources to make them accessible to people from all walks of life. For example, through the use of imagery, metaphor, and creativity.
